A Psychiatrist Discusses the Illnesses of Affection
Most illnesses in medicine are well defined in textbooks which describe signs and symptoms of the disease process. Love sickness, though not a medical illness, has identifiable symptoms as well. There is the characteristic anguish of loss, feelings of emptiness, diminished appetite both for food and for pleasurable activities, and the mourning process. Alternately, there may be an overwhelming love which is so intense that it cannot survive. Many men and women do not stop and analyze the sickness but plunge forward in pursuit of a substitute. Others vow never to love again because they have been so damaged by having fallen in love. It takes time to analyze what went wrong and how a man or woman contributed to the failure of a relationship. Unless this is understood, the error can repeat itself. Future posts will focus on the choice of a mate, and factors such as insecurity and possessiveness which can undermine a relationship.
